Soon after Pearl Harbor Jackie heard the army was drafting and wanted to be a good American so he enlisted. He was sent to Fort Riley, Kansas for basic training. He was commissioned to second lieutenant in January 1943. Jackie's army career was cut short when he was court-martialed in relation to his objects with incidents of racial discrimination. Jackie left the army with honorable discharge.
