Wesley Branch Rickey was an innovative Major League Baseball executive elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967. He was known for creating the minor league farm system, for introducing the batting helmet and for breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier by signing African American player by the name of Jack Roosevelt Robinson. Branch Rickey signed him with a minor league contract on August 28, 1945.
